Xpat Interview: Balázs Zságer (Zagar)

He is the leader of the band called Žagar wich is one of the most popular groups of the Hungarian electronic music scene now. Before he was the keyboard player of Yonderboi. With Yonderboi and his band he played all over Europe from Moscow to Amsterdam.
He is the author of the remarkable track Wings of Love, which earned heavy radio airplay abroad also and secured a no1. spot on the Hungarian MTV. Žagar was nominated for the Best Act in the MTV European Music Awards and also played as the support band of Depeche Mode at the Budapest leg of the Tour of the Universe. Besides Zságer composes music for features, short films and ads as well.

His tunes were selected several times into the well-known American TV series CSI:Miami and CSI:New York. Now he is working on their new album.

1. Where did you grow up?
In a little town called Kaposvár 250km away from Budapest.

2. What Hungarian traditions bring back fond memories of your childhood?
Maybe the spring celebration called Majális and I used to like egg painting at Easter and when I was a child I was amazed by Hungarian authentic folk wranglers(csikós) too.

3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
My friends, the Hungarian cuisine, lake Balaton, the Hungarian forests..lots of things.

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend – what must they absolutely see and do?
First of all to have a bath at the Spas like Széchenyi, Gellért or Rudas. To take a walk on the Margit Sziget. Try some of the good traditional restaurant. Drink a “fröccs” from tasty Hungarian wine at one of the special pubs called “Romkocsma”. And to go to a private party in a roof of a flat on the Danube.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Halászlé and Hagymás rostélyos.

6. What is never missing from your kitchen?
Onion, garlic, pasta and olive oil.

7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
Tihany.

8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
Graphic designer, picture editor or film maker.

9. What’s a job you would definitely never want
Door-keeper.

10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
In Egypt.

11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
Japan.

12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
My favourite band was The Doors, my favourite film was E.T. and Star Wars, my hobby was playing basketball and programming music on a Commodore 64.

13. What can’t you resist?
As Oscar Wilde would put it: I can resist anything but temptation.

14. Red wine or white?
Defenitly red but in summer I prefer white wine.

15. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?
I earn money making music wich is the most pleasant thing for me in the world.

16. Book or movie?
I’m a huge movie fan, but I also like to read.

17. Morning person or night person?
Night of course. Mysteries happen at night.

18. Dog person or cat person?
Dog. But I would not keep animals in the city.

19. Buda or Pest side?
Buda for living, Pest for outgoing.

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
